Joddakai (traditional Romani garment) and Aprons have long been in the service of both men and women.
It is a garment with a living culture that is both practical and decorative as well as symbolic. You will find a version of it in every folk and tribal culture around the world, as well as a version hanging in your own kitchen or workspace!
For me the Apron is the perfect accompianment to magical works. It’s purpose can be either hidden in plain sight or declared as an outwards calling, with capacity for numerous pockets for the ‘tools of the trade’.
The Heritage Apron.
This Apron has serious history...... It is a wonderful piece of cloth that holds the essence of the Divine Feminine.
It is made from a hexagonal pathwork quilt that has been beautifully hand stitched and spans centuaries! There is evidence of fabric patches as early as the 1940's and I suspect, a little earlier. it has been loved and cared for, passed down through the generations and repaired through the ages.
I feel honoured to have played my part in it's like, repairing by hand some of the worn patches, replacing some with new and old cloth and then giving it it's final twist, a new lease of life by adding a few bees and new purpose.......
This is one of a kind, It is truly the cloth of 1000 tales. The more you look the more you see. Can you feel the hands, hear the stories, and join yours to the line of women gone before?
Details: This Apron can be worn either way round. Machine wash on gentle.
Shamanic Apron. Comissions undertaken.
These are made to order and in a multitude of different ways. I work with clients to create the perfect design. You can either come with a list of requirements or it can be done through journey work or a collaborative process......whatever is the required medicine. Options are limitless! You receive a drawing of the design before works are undertaken. It is nearly always possible to make an Apron to suit any budget. Contact me to discuss ideas.
Due to the intensely personal nature of these garments it is often not possible to show the finished item.... so as follows is works in progress to give you an idea of the sort of thing. Anything is possible!
I use a variety of techniques for creating each piece of work, Machine embroidery, hand embroidery, paint, dye, fine needle felting, applique.....what ever feels suitable to your garment.
Sometimes a cloth will arrive with a story already waiting to be told, a purpose in mind or an owner to find.Contact email@example.com tel:07809592423
More about the Joddakai...
In western culture the story of the apron sits firmly with the distaff side and features in faery story and myth as a garment of feminine and magical powers. It's ceremonial uses can still be seen with leaders of religious orders both church, spirit and nature based and participants of sacred rites.
For the Romani The Joddakai was an integral part of life, not only did it keep your clothes clean and protected it also housed your wordly riches.
The tradition of highly decorated aprons comes from stitching all your items of worth about your person for security as you would not leave them unattended in your Vardo (wagon) or bender.
As part of their magical purpose, a Joddakai served as protection garment preserving purity guard as well as safeguarding fertility, due to the obvious position of the garment.
I have a passion for aprons, both for men and women. Whilst mens aprons have long been associated with status and identification, the wearing of one has long been considered an honourable tool of the trade.
I particularly love the tradition and the associations of women's aprons, much as I love the patchwork quilt. The garments are at the heart of life and activety. They witness every action often lasting your whole life long. Traditionally made they are lovingly stitched, woven and pieced together passing from grandmother, mother and daughter. (I still have my mothers from when she was at school! and it was one of the first gifts I remember giving my mother)
They can be magical and ceremonial, hardy and practical, beautiful and elaborate or plain and purposeful.
